Kerry McCarthy, who has written the program notes for the William Byrd Festival since its inception, was born and raised in Portland.  She discovered the delights of early music while in high school, joined Cantores in Ecclesia in 1994, and has been part of the Byrd Festival since it began.  She received her BA from Reed College in 1997 and her PhD from Stanford University in 2003.  She is now Associate Professor of Musicology at Duke University, where she teaches, sings, and publishes widely on early sacred music.  Her first book, Liturgy and Contemplation in Byrd’s Gradualia, was published by Routledge in 2007.  At the moment she is writing a new full-length Byrd biography commissioned by Oxford University Press.
