Michael Wilhite began his musical training on the classical guitar and contrabass, and studied music at San Diego State University. He began playing the lute and building lutes in 1976, and performed with The Guidonian Hand and other ensembles. In recent years Mr. Wilhite has focused on basso continuo with the archlute and theorbo. A former member of Cantores in Ecclesia, he has accompanied that group and other vocalists in works of Monteverdi, Viadana and others. Mr. Wilhite has played the viola da gamba since 2006 and is grateful for training from Tim Scott and Joanna Blendulf. He founded The Wildwood Consort and plays viola da gamba in other groups dedicated respectively to the music of Buxtehude and Rameau. As a luthier, Mr. Wilhite's most recent opus is a 7-string viol after Michel Colichon.
